The Desktop

When computers started out it took up the space equivalent to a room. In the 1970’s HP created the first desktops that could fit on top of a desk also known as the HP 9800 series.

Later on in 1975 IBM created the 5100 that had a CRT display, although small and was programmable in BASIC as well as APL. Unfortunately these computers where expensive so it wasn’t sold for general use.

In the late 70’s and 80’s pc’s such as Apple 2 series and the IBM Pc used standard processors that made it cheaper to use and this increasing its general usage
Today Desktop computers are the most used PC’s in the world and still claim 46% of the Total world market.

Although Laptops are becoming increasingly popular, surveys still show that most business institutions as well as home users prefer desktops as they are much more durable and affordable.

Some of the benefits of a desktop include the following:
It’s very cost effective
It’s very easy to upgrade
Faulty accessories and components are very easy to replace
A desktop is less likely to be stolen than for example a laptop
The abovementioned is just to name a few of the benefits in having a desktop.
